Kravis Discovery Center
+ Open project information
Hold were approached by Brighton based Teq4 with a wonderful opportunity to brand and design the exhibition graphics for the Kravis Discovery Center - part of the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, USA. The centre is an educational exhibition about Native Americans; their history, culture and legacy. The project encompassed everything from the interior graphic design, the identity design and illustration of the various sections of the exhibition, the graphic design for an interactive tablet-based AR guide and a number of other supporting design pieces.
We put our full weight behind the pitch and were thrilled when we were awarded the project against stiff competition. Our illustration style and overall design consideration placed the project firmly within a contemporary footing, referencing the past but carefully avoiding creating a pastiche.
Under the creative direction of Dom Jones of Teq4, the exhibition was divided into a welcome area and three animal themed zones. The animal designs were created to work both as very large scale wall motifs, but also as small icons with the AR guide. To achieve this we experimented with block colour and line weights to create a design that could be iconographic or purely illustrative. The branding was focussed around harnessing geometric patterns and hanging the illustrations within, creating unique shape/animal hybrids that then fed into the identity design. We kept the typography clear and modern throughout, utilising DIN Rounded as the primary font.
As each piece of the project completed it in turn fed into the next piece with everything echoing the vision of the exhibition. The completed exhibition was received with great enthusiasm by both Teq4 and the centre staff. The centre opened its doors on the 30th June 2017, we wish the Kravis Discovery Center great success in what will be a ground breaking exhibition on the history of the Native American people.
“We were allowed a lot of creative freedom on this project by the client and we were looking for an agency that could deliver to a brief that we had developed; a kid friendly, contemporary look blended with artisanal detail commensurate with the objects in the collection. Right from the outset the team at Hold delivered. They interpreted our brief with an eye catching, fun and friendly treatment that sits comfortably in the space and alongside the collection. Throughout the project they always responded positively with care and attention to our demanding requirements and pickiness.”
